"The bottom line" is the real reason for the decision.

Example: "We have no money left. That is the bottom line."

Example: "We want it, but we can't afford it. That's the bottom line."

"The bottom line" is the important thing on which you are basing your decision.

Example: "I like you, but you are too old. That's the bottom line."

Example: "Your grades are not high enough. That's the bottom line."
